90 Words of Support for Breakthrough Breast Cancer

When I learnt that Kate on Thin Ice was looking for 90 kind bloggers to write about an important woman in their life in 90 words to make a difference and help Breakthrough Breast Cancer I just had to join in and show my support.  The 90 words can be about any woman that matters to you – a grandmother, a mum, a daughter, a friend, a woman who means something to you.

Did you know that around 1000 women die from breast cancer every month?  One in eight women will develop breast cancer at sometime in their lifetime.   It is important to note that men also get breast cancer.  The good news is that more people are surviving breast cancer due to greater awareness, improved treatments and better screening.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer is, in their own words, "dedicated to saving lives by finding the causes of breast cancer, improving detection, diagnosis, treatment and services".  There's a wealth of information on their website, including everything you need to know to be breast aware. You can even get a free iPhone app called "ibreastcheck", which includes a video showing you how to check your breasts and the facility to set a self-check reminder so you can monitor any changes in your own breasts.

“Pink Ribbon Bingo have pledged to support Breakthrough Breast Cancer all year round with 15% of the gross revenue accrued through online play on the site being donated to the charity.  Visitors also have the opportunity to donate a percentage of their winnings directly to the charity.  Along with the fundraising element, Pink Ribbon Bingo and The Daily Mail online will be helping the charity to raise awareness by promoting their vital health messages such as TLC (Touch, Look, Check).

Breast cancer has touched my family.  Cancer has touched my life through the lives of those that I love too often, some sad endings and thankfully some happy stories.  Breast cancer sadly took my grandmother’s life when I was 17, she meant the world to me and she is always in my heart and thoughts.  It is because of this personal loss that any cancer causes touch my heart and I like to do what I can support these worthy causes.

My beautiful Mamgu
My Mamgu (grandmother in Welsh) meant the World to me, inspired me and helped make me the woman I am today.  I have a lot to thank her for and even though she is no longer with us I thank her by supporting Breast cancer causes that aim to help raise awareness and improve treatments.

Writing this post and thinking about my Mamgu brings tears to my eyes.  The sadness envelops me and makes 90 words hard to capture.  Shining a bright, happy light to drive away the hurt and sadness that cancer can create I am writing my 90 words about the other important woman who has been there throughout my life – my mum.  My 90 words are dedicated to my gorgeous mum -

Your courage, strength and kindness shines bright.  You are an amazing woman with a heart full of love.  You are my rock and have helped me through so much.  I can only hope to be a fabulous, brilliant mum like you.  I love that you adore your grandson.  Our family is lucky to have you in our lives, no matter what you are always there for all of us.  You deserve health, peace and happiness.  Thank you for being the best mum I could ever dream of.  I love you.

Sadly my grandmother lost the fight with cancer but others can have a happy ending.  By supporting cancer charities we can help raise awareness and support them in cancer research and improved treatments for greater survival.  We need to bear cancer, we need a breakthrough.

  1. A really touching blog post and very moving tribute to your grandmother. I lost my Gran to breast cancer too. Last year I did the 'Race for Life' which is women running to beat any type of cancer. I had such an emotional day - every time I stopped crying I would read someone's tribute on their race number and I would be off again!
