Disney On Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic review

Disney is synonymous with magical stories and captivating characters who enchant and delight both young and old.

When Disney’s wonderous stories and characters are combined with high class, skilled ice skating a truly magical and enthralling show is created by Feld Entertainment - Disney On Ice.

Showcasing a number of renowned Disney films, over 50 beloved characters and 30 popular musical numbers Disney On Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic combines old classics with recent Disney films for a magical experience.

This past weekend we were delighted to visit Cardiff to watch the show and be transported into the world of Disney.

All of us loved the show and enjoyed what we saw so much that we hope that we can experience another show again in the future.

Bug was enamoured with the show and was especially thrilled with the Finding Nemo part of the show. He delighted in seeing Marlin and Dory’s adventures on their quest to find Nemo, with the addition of easy going, cool Crush and his little sea turtle dudes and dudettes being the highlight.

From the first glimpse of Mickey and Minnie Mouse at the start of the show, Jelly Bean was also enthralled. He was hypnotized with the charming show and animated characters whizzing around skillfully on the ice. His eyes never left the stage and it was wonderful to witness him experiencing the magic of Disney in a truly memorable show for the first time.

The performers were exquisite and the ice choreography was truly breathtaking. The lifts, spins, and action from the performers had the audience on their edge of their seats and delivered so many ‘wow’ and magnificent moments. The animated characters and lively Disney songs that had one and all singing along to brought the show and stories of Disney alive.

The impressive special effects and the spectacular costumes worn by the ice skaters made the show extra special. The costumes were superb with exquisite detail true to character that made it feel as if the Disney characters were stepping straight out of the screen into real life. Both of the boys delighted in seeing their favourite characters up close with them especially loving the plush animal outfits of characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck along with the huge and beautiful Crush.

The show began by introducing the crowd to The Mouse Bounce where the dancers encouraged us to get up and dance along. This lively section is part of Disney’s new Fit To Dance initiative which aims to inspire children to have fun and be active through storytelling and dance.

Classic Disney characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy then provide amusing performances with Goofy wanting to make his own movie but needing inspiration - que various performances of beloved Disney stories to inspire!

The first act conjured up favourite Disney stories and songs of Pinocchio (Pinocchio’s Got No Strings was a huge hit with my little ones), Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast (the sight of Lumiere and Cogsworth in all their glory invoked happy memories from my childhood), montage of dances from a number of Disney Princesses and Princes such as Belle and Prince Adam (the Beast), Cinderella and Prince Charming, and Ariel and Prince Eric. The first act came to a close with scenes and songs from the hit film Frozen.

The second act of the show showcased the stories and songs of Aladdin (where a stage full of blue Genies stole the show), Toy Story, Mulan, and The Lion King (got to love Hakuna Matata!).

Whilst all Disney films and characters are loved by us it was good to see films such as Aladdin, Toy Story, The Lion King, and Finding Nemo included to dilute the princessy vibe of the crowd (princesses as far as the eye could see) which whilst lovely is not all that Disney is to us.

With that in mind I personally think the Frozen section was too long in comparison to the rest of the segments. Whilst we love Frozen especially Olaf, we would have like to see a few more classic Disney included to spark memories and magical feelings from other beloved Disney films and a little less of the hit Frozen film.

It was a magical experience and a delightful journey into the world of Disney where characters enthralled, songs charmed and invoked joy, and stunning dance routines were breathtaking.

As we loved what we saw and the little ones were left wanting more, with them being disappointed when the magical bubble burst as we left, we hope to experience the wonder of magical Disney On Ice once more again the future.
