Horsing Around in Galway.

If you’re holidaying in the west of Ireland make sure you pay a visit to the charming city of Galway.  There are plenty cheap hotel rooms available - the Travelodge is a great option for a comfortable stop off on your travels.  And if you’re a horse lover, there’s plenty to entertain you this summer.

Roundstone Connemara Pony, Dog & Sheep Show : 13 July
Not just a great family day out, this annual event, where the Connemara Pony Show is the main attraction, is a fascinating insight into the rural life of the Galway area. Go along and see if you can tell which ponies, dogs and sheep will nab the winning rosettes.

Galway Races Festival : 28th July – 3rd August
Every year thousands of people flock to Galway racecourse on the outskirts of the city for Ireland’s biggest horseracing event.  There’s a Ladies Day and a Family Day, ensuring everyone can get in on the fun. By night, the whole town is taken over by the party spirit, so if you want to experience the craic in full swing, this is the time to do it.  Just be prepared to leave with a few less euros than you arrived with!

Omney Races : 3rd August
Taking place on the beach at Omney Strand in Connemara, this event is a stark contrast to the crowds and clamour of the Galway Races Festival. Its seaside setting means it’s been rapidly gaining in popularity as a day out over the last few years.  Pack a picnic and settle down for a day of eating, spectating and hopefully sunbathing.

Horses are an intrinsic part of the heart and soul of Galway but even if you don’t fancy a flutter, you’ll still be sure to fall in love with this friendliest of cities.
