Baker Days Letterbox Cake Review - Mothers Day Treat.

I have a fondness for a tasty slice of cake….I simply cannot resist a delicious looking cake.  Most of all I love my mum’s cakes, she is a whizz in the kitchen and bakes delicious cakes and treats masterfully and with ease.  I enjoy baking myself but my cakes are never as tasty and scrummy as the cakes my mum bakes, even though this is mainly due to the fact that my mum is a natural at baking and without fail always creates delicious cakes made with love, I think the fact that I enjoy eating her cakes more than my own is because they have been baked by someone else.  Apart from when my mum bakes it is not often that I get to enjoy a yummy cake that I have not baked myself.

As I love cake, especially cake that I have not baked myself I was pleased when I was offered the chance of reviewing a cake from Baker Days.   Also with Mother’s Day this month I was delighted about getting a cake that I did not have to bake as a treat for myself.

Baker Days provide customers with “quality cakes from artisan bakers”.  Their vision is to create unique and personalised cakes that do not cost a fortune and can be ordered online and delivered through the post straight to the recipient.

I was given the opportunity to review one of their new letterbox cakes, which is according to Baker Days “the world’s smallest personalised cake in a tin” and “the perfect gift for friends near and far” as it is “petite, personalised and postable”.

As I was given the chance to choose what cake design I would like to receive, I popped onto the Baker Days website to browse their range of cakes.  To begin with I was a little overwhelmed with the choice of cakes available as the website is filled with over 500 designs to choose from.  Thankfully the handy, plentiful list of categories helped narrow down my choice.  I am impressed with the choice of categories available and think that Baker Days have covered all possible occasions where a cake would be needed; the categories available to choose from include Anniversary, Engagement, New Baby and Thank You plus many, many more cake categories.  Within the categories the choice of designs is vast, with many gorgeous designs to choose from that can be personalised with a special message and in some cases personalised with a photo.

With Mother’s Day on the 10th of March I decided to choose a design from their range of Mother’s Day cakes as a special treat to myself.  I was tempted by most of the choices available and after looking at so many gorgeous cakes I opted for the Mothers Day Cake Hearts.

Not only do Baker Days give customers the choice from a huge range of designs and a choice of cake size, customers can also choose what cake recipe they would like from either sponge cake, carrot cake, fruit cake double chocolate chip cake or a gluten and wheat free cake .  Depending on the recipe chosen there may be an additional cost, but all prices are clearly shown on the website as you customise your cake.  As the cake was going to be a treat I decided to be extra naughty and opt for the double chocolate chip cake…..I have a weakness for chocolate cake and could not resist.

Once I had decided on a cake design I was able to personalise the cake with a special message and as I was having a Mother’s Day cake I decided to have “Happy Mothers Day Mum Lots of Love …….xxx”.  I asked if it was possible to have ‘Mum’ written in the centre of the heart and Baker Days happily accommodated my design wish.

Having never heard of let alone used a personalised cake delivery service I was excited and intrigued at the prospect of having a cake sent to me through the post even though I must admit I was a little sceptical that a cake delivered through the post would arrive in one piece.

The letterbox cake is designed to fit in a standard letterbox which I think is great as it allows for a convenient method of delivery.  I was excited about seeing the cake when it arrived in a little white parcel box addressed to me.  Inside the stiff cardboard parcel box was a little card, a small packet of love hearts and a petite cake tin.  The cake tin is adorable, I love how dainty it is and the embossed ‘Just For You’ message on the tin is a sweet touch.  Not only is the cake tin great for protecting the cake during delivery but I love the fact that the cake tin can be used again or the sentimental side of me thinks it would make for a lovely keepsake.

Inside the cute cake tin was a perfectly intact small, delicious looking cake.  I was a tad apprehensive that I would damage the cake when attempting to get it out of the cake tin but thankfully Baker Days have thought of everything and included a paper tab that you pull to help the cake pop out of the tin without any damage.  I like the fact that Baker Days have also included a little label that shows the ingredients used to make the cake, the allergy information and the best before date.

The design is gorgeous and just as I had asked for.   I love the colours of the flowers and the writing is perfect.  I think the pretty design makes for a perfect gift to give to a loved one and I adore the personalised message.  Even though I adore the design and the pretty little flowers I do think this particular design would look more impressive with better detail on a bigger cake.

We were all eager to put the cake to a taste test and see if it tasted as delicious as it looked.  The cake cut easily into 4 decent sized portions (Lee did comment that with his sweet tooth he could have easily eaten the whole cake by himself in one go).  The cake was packed with flavour; the icing was tasty and the sponge was light and fluffy.  The double chocolate chip sponge was fresh, moist and deliciously chocolately and even though a few more choc chips would not have gone amiss the cake was scrummy.  The cake was a yummy, delicious treat that was quickly devoured…..even Bug gobbled it up in double quick time.

I love the concept of Baker Days; I think their service is unique and I think that it is fantastic that the cake is delivered to the recipient straight from Baker Days taking out the hassle of sending a gift and I think this service is particularly useful for sending a tasty gift to loved ones who do not live near you for a special occasion.

The website is easy to navigate and use, allowing customers to personalise a cake to their requirements without any hassle thanks to Baker Days’ simple personalisation process.  I like that the website clearly shows the prices, highlighting the additional cost for the different recipe choices available, allowing customers to know how much the cake will cost them which is particularly useful if people have a budget to stick to.

With such an impressive range of designs available Baker Days cater for all occasions.  I am very impressed with the range of designs and I think it is fantastic that you can personalise cakes with messages and photographs.  I think a Baker Days cake is a sweet gift idea and I think the personalisation gives the gift a lovely personal tough, adding a little love to a gorgeous and tasty treat for loved ones on their special day.

I am impressed with the range of recipe choices available and think it is notable that Baker Days have taken into consideration people who suffer from allergies by providing the option of a gluten and wheat free cake.  Not only am I impressed with the choice of designs and cake recipes I think it is fantastic that there is a choice of cake size.  As well as their Letterbox cake, Baker Days also create Small Party cakes which is “just right for a small party” with 8-10 portions and a Large Party cake which provides a whopping 50-60 portions.  Baker Days also make Cupcakes which can also be personalised.  The Letterbox cake price starts at £14.99 for a basic sponge cake and delivery which I think is very reasonable for a tasty, high quality, personalised cake delivered straight to the recipient’s door.  Next day delivery in the UK is also available at a cost which is great if you need a delicious treat for a special occasion at short notice.

We have all enjoyed Baker Days’ cake and it was a lovely treat.  I was pleasantly surprised with how fantastic the cake looked and thought Baker Days did a fantastic job bringing the cake to life from the design on the website to a pretty, delicious tasting cake.  I would definitely use the Baker Days service and I am considering getting a larger cake and some cupcakes for Bug’s birthday at the end of the month.
