Dreamworks Trollhunters Defenders Of Arcadia game review

Our 9 year old is a huge fan of the hit Dreamworks and Netflix Emmy® award- winning Tales of Arcadia trilogy. He loves watching the inter-connected trilogy made up of Trollhunters, 3Below and the recently released hit series, Wizards, which was created and executive produced by Academy Award® winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro.

As he enjoys Tales of Arcadia and is an avid gamer he was bubbling with excitement at the news that there is now an action-adventure platform game based on the successful series - Trollhunters Defenders of Arcadia.

Outright Games, Universal Games and Digital Platforms, and Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe have today launched the brand-new video game, DreamWorks Trollhunters Defenders of Arcadia, available on Playstation® 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch ™ and PC Digital Download.

Inspired by Tales of Arcadia, the game Defenders of Arcadia has been developed by prolific game developer Wayforward, who are masters of platform action-adventure games.

DreamWorks Trollhunters Defenders of Arcadia tells a new action-packed story that takes place between the distinct fantasy worlds of the three series and serves as a key narrative beat that unifies the trilogy.

Become the hero and save the Trollhunter Universe

Arcadia is under attack! Venture through the Trollhunter Universe as the hero to save the universe.

Players assume the role of fan-favorite character, Jim Lake Jr., as he travels through time to catch the trickster troll Porgon and attempt to stop the time-pocalypse.

Players will go on an adventure across the game's unique worlds and meet familiar characters as they level up armor, gain new abilities and become the hero of Arcadia.

Fans can expect all-new content recorded specifically for the game from stars of the series, including Emile Hirsch as Jim Lake Jr., Charlie Saxton as Toby Domzalski, Lexi Medrano as Claire and David Bradley as Merlin.

“Jim is a really special character so I’m very proud to be part of this new video game, which I hope will appeal to a whole new audience of Trollhunters fans,” said Emile Hirsch, who voices Jim Lake Jr., the lead protagonist of the series and video game. Charlie Saxton, voice of Toby Domzalski, said, “It’s been a blast voicing Toby throughout the Tales of Arcadia series, and bringing that character to life in a video game is something I’m very excited to share with our fans.”

“Trollhunters Defenders of Arcadia builds on the fascinating narrative and compelling characters that have been expertly established in the popular trilogy,” said Jim Molinets, SVP of Production, Universal Games and Digital Platforms. “The game provides a deeply rich and immersive gameplay experience that we hope fans will enjoy with friends for a long time to come. ”

Terrific trollhunting

As a fan of the series T has enjoyed stepping into the role of the renowned hero Jim Lake Jr. He likes the fact that the all-star voice cast features well-known stars from the series which helps bring the world of Tales of Arcadia alive to fans.

When beginning the epic quest to defend Arcadia players can choose to play as human for normal mode or troll for hard mode.

The game is easy to navigate and control with the game providing information about new skills. As you play you upgrade your trollhunter which helps prepare you for defeating Porgon. Gain experience to level up your armour and boost abilities to become more powerful.

If you are a little worse for wear after a battle with an enemy find Nougat Nummy to restore a heart in your health meter or snag a extra life. As you play the game you are given new quests which will help you in your challenge of defeating Porgon thanks to helpful rewards.

Players can have friends join the trollhunters team by playing couch co-op and get a helping hand from loved characters to face unknown evil forces and help stop the time-pocalypse. Enchanting the game with magic Merlin helps our hero with things such as Merlin Platforms.

The action adventure platform game is fun to play and is the ideal difficulty level for fans of the series who are gamers aged 6-12 years. The style of the game lives up to the joy of playing classic platform games.

The game’s design wonderfully duplicates the look of the series so that the game allows fans to immerse themselves in the fantastical world of Arcadia. Plus the characters look like those in the series.

The game offers variety thanks to the different level settings as you travel to different areas via portals on a quest to stop Porgo. The level scenes include sci-fi worlds, urban town areas and historical, magical lands.

This fantasy game also conjures up variety as you have to battle an array of other worldly creatures. One of T’s favourite enemies is the inferno felines Hellheetis.

As well as the standard stages of the game, there are also secret levels. Find a Horngazel to find treasure behind chalk drawn doorways. Within the secret levels you are tasked with the mission of collecting as many coins as possible. Who doesn’t enjoy a fun little bonus round?!

The game also features Gnomes who are quick and sneaky, if caught can be used to play Omelrug’s Gnome challenge in the Troll pub.

Another collectable which adds fun and a challenge to the game is to find dirty socks scattered throughout the different levels. Smelly and delicious, dirty socks are cherished by trolls in the trollmarket. They can be traded in the Rot and Gut sock exchange.

Played by us on the Nintendo Switch it can be played on TV, tabletop and handheld supported play modes.

Overall the game has been a big hit with our Tales of Arcadia fan. He likes being able to play as his favourite character and loves the variety of enemies to battle against to save the day. It is a fun, easy to play action adventure platform game with fantasy violence and really does bring the Tales of Arcadia alive for fans to enjoy playing.

DreamWorks Trollhunters Defenders of Arcadia is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC Digital. The final installment of the Tales of Arcadia trilogy, Wizards, is streaming now on Netflix.
