Are you tired of being overlooked in your backyard by your neighbours? If so, then this post is for you. Really look at some of the strategies you can use to create more privacy in your backyard spaces. You'll be less overlooked by neighbours and you'll be able to enjoy your outdoor areas without feeling self-conscious.

The most obvious place to start is by upgrading your fencing panels. Getting this right provides you with instant protection year-round.

Try if you can to go for fence panels that are between 6-8 feet tall. These offer optimal screening and can come in a variety of styles. Just make sure you check local regulations and audits for how tall your fence panels can be. Some areas have strict limits on these.

Plant tall hedges

If you want even more privacy and don't want to create any confrontation with neighbors, then you could opt for planting tall hedges and shrubs. These can grow very tall, but can also be maintained relatively easily if you have a good arborist. The most popular choices for perimeter hedges are plants like Leyland Cypress, Cherry Laurel, and Arborvitae.

If you want to create a more attractive visual effect, you can:

  1. Stagger plants in a row for thicker screening

  2. Layer shorter plants at the front

Use layered plantings and greenery

If that's not an option for you or you don't like the idea of big bushes, then you could opt for layered plantings and greenery. This is where you add to the height of your existing wall or fence by layering ornamental trees and mid-level shrubs around your boundary areas.

What's nice about these options is that it blocks views from multiple angles. The more tall items you can have in different places in your garden, the less likely it is that people will be able to see it and see what you're doing. If you want to, you can also train vines on tall posts. These can give you quicker results, especially if you choose thick-growing vines.

Add pergolas and trellises

You could also look into adding pergolas and trellises. Most neighborhoods won't or cities don't regulate against these as long as they don't exceed a certain height, which means that you can give yourself protection from lines of sight that come from above. This is particularly useful if you have a garden in an area with a lot of high-rise buildings. Once you have these structures in place, you can get screening from the top and to the sides. Add climbing vines to them like grapes, clematis, and wisteria for a more beautiful and natural effect. Place these structures next to patios and seating areas to enable more intimacy.

Install privacy screens

Finally, you might want to look into installing privacy screens if you're in a particularly overlooked area. These are often made of movable barriers, made of wood slats and bamboo. They're flexible and budget-friendly, ideal for renters who want a quick set-up.
