My top tips for saving money on family days out.

Like most mums, I always try to be as frugal as possible. Having children to take care of is expensive, which means that our paychecks don’t stretch as far as we would like them to. However we don’t let that stop us doing things as a family and going on fun days out.

When money is tight going for family fun days out might seem impossible but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of ways that you can make family days out more affordable, all it takes is a bit of creative thinking, that’s all.

Book in advance
We all know that tickets for events are cheaper when booked in advance, but what about attractions? Believe it or not if you book your tickets to attractions in advance, like theme parks, often you end up paying less.

So if you know that you want to visit a certain place with your family, start looking in advance to get the best deals. Often, by booking in advance, you can save around ten to twenty percent off the cost of entry, so it’s worth doing.

Make use of free  and low cost entry places
We are huge fans of family days out to places that are free or very cheap to visit. Days out to outdoor places such as beaches, parks, woodlands and castles can be a fun and frugal family day out.

Take advantage of group discounts
Often attractions like zoos, theme parks and activity centres offer group discounts for 10 or more people. These discounts often seem out of reach to many of us, but they don’t have to be.

Why not contact your friends and extended family and arrange a group trip to one of these places? Failing that, how about organising a trip with the parents from your child’s nursery or class? It might only be a saving of a couple of pounds per person but every little helps.

Look online for deals and discounts
Often if you have a look online you can find some incredible deals and discounts to local theme parks and attractions. The best sites to use are Wowcher and Vouchercloud, both of these are regularly updated with new offers.

From deals for play centres to theme park offers you can find all sorts of vouchers online. Being a parent is expensive especially when it comes to days out. So whatever you can do to make it cheaper, you should do it.

Take a packed lunch
On top of the cost of tickets, paying for an overpriced meal can be a real nightmare. In most attractions, the food is fast food - burgers, chips, and chicken nuggets, and is incredibly expensive.

Instead of filling your children with overpriced junk food, take a packed lunch with you. Lugging it around all day might be irritating, but in terms of the money that you will save, it’s definitely worth it. Many attractions have lockers where you can put your picnic stuff until you need it - you can check if this is the case by visiting the company website.

Family days out can be incredibly expensive but they don’t have to be. By taking note of my tips, you can save yourself money when it comes to going on family days out.
