Opening up their farms
to the general public this month farmers across the country are
working with the charity LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) to
host Open Farm Sunday.
LEAF Open Farm Sunday,
managed by LEAF, is one of the farming industry’s biggest success
stories. Since the first Open Farm Sunday in 2006, over 1500 farmers
across the UK have opened their gates and welcomed 1.8 million people
onto their farm for one Sunday each year.
It is a fantastic
opportunity for everyone, young and old, to discover at first hand
what it means to be a farmer and the fabulous work they do producing
our food, enhancing the countryside and all the goods and services
farmers provide.
Each event is unique
based around the farm’s individual story. Activities during the day
may include a farm walk, nature trail, tractor and trailer rides,
demonstrations, animal feeding, pond dipping, activities for
children, a mini farmers market or farm shop.
Whilst we are fortunate
to experience farming and animals through my family’s farm and
local experiences with farm animals, as we love animals and admire
the hard work that farmers do we love Open Farm Sunday. Also we fully
champion Open Farm Sunday as this initiative allows children and
grown-ups who are not as fortunate as us to have experienced a farm
see how a farm works and get to get to know farm animals up close and
personal.
Last year we visited a
local farm - Lower Treginnis Farm, St.David’s in Pembrokeshire -
and had a fun-filled farmtastic day out with them and Blas Y Tir. Here are a few of the
highlights of our time at Lower Treginnis which is 1 of 3 farms ran
by the charity Farms for City Children and is the most westerly farm
in Wales.
Tomorrow many farms
across the country are opening their gates to the public to showcase
their farms and the animals they tend to. As we love Open Farm Sunday
we will be revisiting Lower Treginnis Farm tomorrow the 11th of June
2017 and as a bonus another local farm near my family - Gorwel Farm
in Ceredigion - is hosting Open Farm Sunday next week on the 18th of
June 2017 which we will be visiting so the kids get to experience 2
farms this year.
Take a look at the Open Farm Sunday website to find a farm near you that you can visit for
Open Farm Sunday.
