The Importance of Community Involvement for Children

A lot of schools, like this girls prep school in Surrey, and local organisations put together events and activities so that children can get involved in community-run initiatives. They’re hugely beneficial for children, parents and organisations alike, as well as being a learning experience for all. In this guide we take a look at the importance of community involvement for children.

It improves their independence skills

If a child is shown to be capable of doing certain tasks then getting them to help with the community is a good way of boosting those skills. Whether they’re helping clean up a children’s playground or helping at a charity stall they’re using their communication skills to complete the task quickly and to a good standard. At some stages they’ll also be left alone to run something, which is a great way of testing your child’s problem-solving skills.

They’re building their collaboration skills

Being able to work in a team and delegate tasks is a big thing children will get used to as they grow older. A lot of community projects or volunteering is performed best through working together in order to complete tasks and get things done on time. Your child will be getting hands-on with a lot of different tasks and communicating with other people in their team, giving them plenty of experience in a number of different roles.

They’re learning about a lot of common issues

If they work at a homeless shelter for a weekend they’re going to be much more exposed to the pressures homeless people face and what they have to deal with on a daily basis. If your child offers to volunteer in a care home they’ll be facing a lot of different issues that the elderly face and what they’ll need to do to help them with their day-to-day activities. Experiences like these can show your child how important their work is to the organisation they’re working with and how it can help change people’s lives.
