Helping Your Child Make New Friends

Making new friends can be a daunting task, but it’s a common element of life, and we all go through moments where we have to connect with people to form friendships. Having a healthy range of friendships is going to greatly boost confidence in your child, and give you the freedom to let your child go further with their skills.

In this guide from a senior school in Surrey, we take a look at the ways you can help your child make new friends, including the ones that can last for a lifetime.

Organise parties with lots of different people

Having the chance to meet kids the same age as your child, or at least a similar age, is going to be the tricky part. Help your child with this by arranging parties or get-togethers that let them make friends easily. They can be play dates, dinner with your neighbours and friends or with friends that your child already knows of from other schools or within the neighbourhood, clubs and more.

Explore different activities outside of school

While schools are perfect for extracurricular activities, it’s also great to try out activities and sports that aren’t available at your child’s school. This gives them the opportunity to meet new people and grow their skills in a way that works for them. It also means that your child is able to find lots of new interests for this reason; they are able to try something different and will help your child make lots of new friends.

Work on your child’s confidence and communication

Being able to communicate well is going to make friendship a lot easier to handle and build naturally. In doing so, your child will have a better time making friends with people they haven’t connected with yet, and it also helps you trust in your child to make the right decisions.
