How to Prepare Your Garden for Autumn

Now that we’re nearing the end of August, we’re starting to get the summer blues and will need to think about preparing our gardens for the autumn season. It’s time to clear away the annual bloomers and prepare for colder weather. To help you, we have some tips from a topsoil seller in London.

Clear Away the Annuals

Unfortunately, the weather can get very chilly here in the UK. Plants that bloom and flourish finish flowering and can be thrown away ready for the autumn. This will help you to keep a clean and tidy looking garden that is prepped and ready for the next season.

Protect Your Taps

You may have an outdoor tap to make things a little easier for yourself when gardening. These can freeze over when temperatures plummet, making them impossible to use. They can be protected by using a bag as a cover. Watering cans are just as important and valuable to protect. Those made from zinc can be damaged by ice which is why you should store them carefully and away from the elements.

Plant Evergreens

Evergreen plants live and thrive through all seasons. They are the best choice when it comes to gardening in the UK as you can benefit from a nice and pretty looking garden all year long.

Some evergreen plants that you can grow in your garden are:

  • Japanese Holly

  • Dwarf Pine

  • Globe Arborvitae

  • Boxwood

  • Japanese Pieris

  • Creeping Juniper

  • Camellia

  • Blue Holly

Tidy Away

The new season will bring mud, dirt, and grime along with it. While your plant pots and accessories may do fine with a wipe down, you should tidy and put them away for safekeeping. Empty out any soil and debris and clean off with some soapy water to have accessories that you can use again.
