Ideas for a cosy date night in

Quality time as a couple is important to help keep the relationship happy and healthy. Regular date nights are fantastic for reinforcing a couple's bond, keeping communication flowing and ensuring the spark is still there. But for couples with kids date nights can be tricky. Finding the time, energy, inclination, money plus a babysitter to have regular date nights can be challenging.

Thankfully you don't have to venture from home to have a date night. The beauty of a date night in is that once the kids are in bed you can enjoy quality time as a couple from the comfort of your own home. Whether you watch movies together on a Panasonic wireless home cinema system or enjoy a meal for two at home date nights in at home can be the ideal solution for couples with kids who struggle to make date nights out work for them.

Home-Based Hobbies You Can Start Today

Having hobbies and interests is a good way to keep busy, de-stress and pursue things that aren’t related to work and your other responsibilities.

The issue with hobbies, however, is that they cost money. Joining a club, going to the gym or going to classes can cost money, and might not always fit in your budget. So why not explore your hobbies at home instead? There are plenty of fun hobbies you can choose from that can keep you entertained, and maybe teach you some new skills too. Here are some home-based hobbies you can start today.

Home interior design styles

When Lee and I moved in with each other after a long distance relationship it soon became apparent that whilst we shared many interests and a love for each other, our home styles and decor tastes differed greatly.

Over the years it has been a struggle to combine our differing styles and often there has been a lot of compromise when decorating our home and making home improvements.

Living off the grid.

Living off the grid is a life goal for some, but can be quite nerve racking. To start living off the grid you don’t have to instantly move to the middle of nowhere and cut off all ties with the modern world. Living a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature, using only economical natural resources is difficult but can be really rewarding. Below are a few basic tips to get you started if you’re thinking of going off the grid but scared to take the plunge.

Start storing fuel.
Storing your own fuel is a great way to start if you’re thinking of moving towards living off the grid. Invest in a fuel storage tank to start storing your own fuel. If you can buy the fuel when it’s cheap and stock up this works out much cheaper and means you’ll be self-sufficient and confident in the knowledge that you’ll never run out of fuel.

Learn how to grow your own food.
There are lots of different methods you can use to grow your own food. Crop rotation on an allotment is a great way to start. By planting crops that belong to different plant families in different areas of your beds and then rotating them around the beds each passing year, you should have healthy crop of nutritious fruit and vegetables. Rotating your crops has lots of benefits, plants are less likely to pick up bugs and diseases and it helps to prevent weeds from growing.

Flooring that can handle the childhood years.

Children = mess

Whilst most of us would love to live in a world where mess is miraculously tided up for us or not seen ever at all and where spills, sticky stains, food fun, dirt and paint explosions are unheard of unfortunately for the majority of parents our little ones usually come hand in hand with mess of some sort.

When decorating and furnishing the home as parents to children who create mess and mayhem on a daily basis it can be a wise move to think hard about what furniture, paint and flooring you have so that they can withstand everything your little bundles of joy and mess can throw at them.

With flooring taking a particularly hard beating, being used again and again as we all stomp our feet back and forth on it along with children playing on it, picking the right flooring is vital.

Whilst soft, warm and cosy on the toes carpet does have its downsides. If you have a muddy footprint, accident prone, knocking over drinks, paint splashing creative and stain-creating kind of child like I do carpets simply cannot withstand the abuse which takes its toll leaving the carpet looking stained and old fast!

A nursery created with love.

Whilst Jelly Bean is currently in our bedroom, snoozing snugly next to our bed in his SnuzPod the time will come when he leaves our room to his own little space in the house.

Designing and creating a nursery for our little bundle of love, a beautiful space created with love, allows me to browse a vast range of nursery and baby products to find the perfect ones for us.

Thanks to the inspirational Homify I have found a number of gorgeous items that would create a unique and beautiful space for our little Jelly Bean once the time comes for him to fly the nest and leave the safety of our bedroom.

As I want to create a unique space made with love I want a stunning and unusual cotbed as the centrepiece of the room. The Elephant Cotbed by Adorable Tots most definitely fits the bill! The striking cotbed suits our eclectic style and our love of animals, especially elephants.

Getting our new mattress online with home delivery.

Recently me and my partner were surprised to find out that we were going to be blessed with another child. When our first son was born, I remember very vividly how much pain my back was in during and after his birth. We decided that we were not going to go through all that pain again and decided a new mattress would be the perfect way to help me ease through this pregnancy.

Our current mattress is closing in on seven years old, and I think because it was too firm, it was causing me significant discomfort in my muscles and joints. During the last few months of being pregnant with Bug, I could barely lay down let alone sleep on that mattress. So we decided that now was the time to search for that new mattress.

I have to admit I was a little overwhelmed when I started searching for mattresses online. As my partner is off at work from sunrise to sunset it can be a real challenge to shop with him for a new mattress. Since we knew the size of the mattress, we only needed to find a similar mattress that was less firm than the one we purchased several years ago. With the hours and the type job my partner has it can be near impossible to get him to commit to time shopping for food, let alone a brand new mattress. Also as we do not own a van or have family close to us here to lend a hand, it was important that we found a mattress with home delivery.

With the new baby due in July and me watching our four year old son each day on my own, I decided if I did not find a mattress now that I would easily put it off until it was too late. So I searched a few websites in an effort to close the deal. In addition to the confusing choice of websites promising low mattress prices, I was also having trouble finding a company where I could get the mattress with home delivery as many were either pick-up only or charged a huge fee for delivery.

As the choice was endless I decided to wait till that evening when I had the house to myself to find the perfect online mattress retailer. A few hours later after playing lots of games and climbing in his bed, Bug fell asleep and I got back on my computer. I narrowed down my search this time by searching for a company selling mattresses with nationwide home delivery so they could deliver here in Pembrokeshire, Wales. I clicked on the first website which was Cutprice Mattresses and began my search.

If sofa’s could talk.

I am sure if your sofa could talk it would say a thousand words. The amount of stories your sofa could tell would be vast after all it would have witnessed over years of loyal service in your home.

With sofas being central in many homes, being at the heart of family life they would have witnessed so much throughout its lifetime. If you think about it your sofa will have witnessed so many events in your life.

It has been there offering you a comforting seat as you have watched countless hours of TV shows and films, and been there with you as you have been on the edge of your seat watching a crucial match or been passionately playing a game on your console. It will have offered open arms and been a temporary bed as you have had forty winks. It will have witnessed kisses, cuddles, arguments, tears and so much more!

I know our sofa will have witnessed so much over the years and have so many stories to tell if it could talk.

Our tatty old but much loved sofa has seen and been through so much. It was the first sofa that Lee and I bought together. It offered up it comfy seats for me to snuggle on as I had cuddles with Lee watching films before inevitably falling asleep half way through the film when pregnant with Bug.

It has been at the heart of our family since we bought home our first child from the hospital. Our snug sofa was where I set up a breastfeeding nest and enjoyed so many cwtches with my little baby. It has witnessed many of Bug’s milestones such as his first words, his first steps and the first time he built a tower out of blocks.

How to make bathroom renovations less stressful.

When there’s so much money going into a project and your time and space is set to be invaded for a week, or a number of weeks, a bathroom renovation is bound to be stressful. One of the important things to remember is the end result and the reason why you are getting the work done in the first place. Having a relaxing bathroom to enjoy and be proud to show off to guests should be worth the temporary stress. But here are a few tips to keep your stress levels down while the work is going on.

Set down a sensible budget
Spiralling costs are a sure fire way to let the stress of a renovation job mount up. Check the prices of the units and accessories that you want before you commit and leave some room for costs being added on as the job is being completed and snagging issues hit. It is possible to save money by looking at clearance items such as mirrors in store’s accessories departments to keep the overall cost of the project down.

Decorating Bug's bedroom Disney style.

When we found out we were expecting Bug we were excited about creating a unique nursery for our little baba. As both Lee and I love animals we soon settled on an animal theme for the nursery which we thought would be a great unisex design.

As Bug grew inside of me and my bump got bigger and bigger Lee worked hard on the nursery, pouring his love into creating the perfect room for his first born.  After hours and hours of painting by hand with love, sweat and tears being shed (plus a little help from mama-to-be too) Lee had created a wondrous animal themed nursery ready for when we lovingly welcomed Bug into the world.

How to Create a Harry Potter Themed Bedroom.

Despite the final book being released in 2007, Harry Potter is still massively popular and it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon with new films and short stories planned for the future. If your child is mad about the boy wizard then you could try making them a Harry Potter themed bedroom that will make them feel like they’re at Hogwarts.

Here’s how…

Wall Murals
Whilst you could go for Harry Potter wallpaper, it would be that little bit more special if you went for wall murals instead. You can buy stick on pieces and stencils to draw around to help create more of a theme for the room. You could even use a projector to project images on the wall to draw around. For example, you could have the famous images of the Hogwarts Express going over the bridge, a Quidditch match or even Hogwarts itself.

My #shelfie

I am a borderline hoarder.  I am very sentimental and keep anything and everything that has a sentimental memory or emotion attached to it.  I have boxes filled with old letters, cards and stubs from days out and have lots of knick-knacks and ornaments that have a personal sentimental attachment.  In our old house I had lots of shelves where I could display my sentimental ornaments along with lots of candles, vases filled with fresh flowers and my art; but alas since moving I now have very limited space to showcase my sentimental wares.

Until we get around to putting up some shelves (which Lee seems to be dragging his feet about as he has a minimalist style which clashes with my eclectic, hoarder style) I am limited to showcasing my favourite ornaments on my beautiful dresser in our bedroom and the one shelf in our house, the mantle-piece.

On my #shelfie I have some my most treasured and sentimental knick-knacks.  The shelf is adorned with a mismatch of ornaments and knick-knacks, all of which mean remind me of a cherished memory and a dear loved one.

Quick & easy ways of making your new house a home.

If you’ve just moved into a new house then there’s a very good chance it won’t feel like a home right away.  It takes time for you to get the place just how you want it and add those little idiosyncrasies that make it unique and special too you.

However, there are a few simple things that can get your new house feeling like a home in no time…

Unpack!
Moving house is stressful and time consuming, so it can be all too easy to just leave stuff in bags and boxes until you can be bothered to unpack everything.  However, the longer you leave it, the longer it’ll all stay packed away.  Just get it done as soon as possible so that all the boxes are gone and you don’t feel like you’re living in a perpetual state of moving house.
