Garden time with kids - vegetable growing

Both of the boys love being outdoors. They especially love spending time in the garden. Not only do they love playing in the garden but they also adore helping to care for the garden.

From a young age they’ve both been little green fingered gardeners who love nothing more than helping tend to the garden. They love planting seeds and caring for plants and flowers, watching them grow and bloom. They also find it lots of fun to get stuck in and muddy digging up holes to plant beautiful plants and flowers.

How your garden can help tackle air pollution

AD

Rising air pollution is a big problem. Air pollution can cause both short term and long term effects on health. In fact 40,000 deaths each year in the UK are linked to toxic air levels. The severity of this invisible killer is highlighted in the fact that one girl's tragic death could mark the first death certificate to have 'toxic air' cited as the primary cause of death.

With toxic air impacting on our health it is no surprise that people are considering what they can do to tackle air pollution.

Looking at our carbon footprint and making positive changes to lower our carbon footprint can help fight against rising air pollution.

Another way to change toxin levels in the air is to look at things that will clean the air – PLANTS! Thankfully there are a number of plants that can be grown in your garden and community areas that are ideal for fighting air pollution as they help purify and clean the air. Let's venture outdoors and look at the best plants to help purify, filter and clean the air.

Ideas for a summer house

AD

When I was a child I used to love visiting my great great aunty Nansi as she had a summer house in her garden. Positioned to the side of her immaculate lawn and amongst blooming flowers that she took great care of her summer house was a place for her to relax in on her sun loungers, a tranquil place to read a book and where she could admire the views. Her summer house was a favourite childhood haunt of mine, I spent hours in it when we visited her and I loved playing in it.

As I have such fond memories of her summer house I’ve always wished that I could one day have a summer house in my garden.

As well as satisfying my inner child’s desire to have a garden summer house to call my own, having a summer house in our garden would also be a great way to add more space to our house.

Creating a safe and kid friendly garden

We love being outdoors. As we love spending time outdoors when we are not out and about having grand adventures in the great outdoors we naturally spend as much time as possible in the garden.

I have always loved spending time in the garden and spent many hours tending to and relaxing in the garden with a good book before I had my little family. Whilst the days of relaxing in the sun in peace and quiet with a good book are now very rare thanks to my boisterous boys, long days in the garden are even more frequent than pre-kids.

Even though the general up-keep of the garden is the same now as it was before kids such as mowing the lawn, keeping garden furniture clean, treated and in good condition, and planting flowers; now that I have kids the safety of the garden is now more important than ever.

So that we can spend hours at a time in the garden, having lots of fun exploring our little outdoor haven and enjoy playing with outdoor toys I make sure that the garden is kid friendly. Here are a few of our top tips for a kid friendly and safe garden -

Easy garden workout guide.

Let’s just start with the obvious: exercise is good for you. Even without the scare statistics we all know getting out and doing something is better than sitting around eating crisps and gummy bears.

Gym memberships are expensive” is the UK’s favourite excuse for not exercising. But that starts to look a bit thin when you probe deeper and find, most people are prepared to pay for a gym membership but think it’s a waste of money because they don’t go. Work and life getting in the way is the top reason given for lapsing, but closer examination reveals plenty of us, just don’t like gyms. The equipment’s complex bordering on incomprehensible. Unless you hire a trainer for a few sessions you’ll be clueless and quite probably, humiliated. Gyms are filled with an overpowering scent of unhealthy competition. And, if you thought the membership was expensive, check out the price of holding your own as far as workout gear goes. Taking up running is a great and inexpensive way to exercise, but it’s tricky from scratch too and could give you more problems than it solves if you’re even slightly unfit.

So where does an ordinary human with an ordinary body and a little bit of ambition start, without heading straight for the mean-world of gyms or pounding pavements in earnest?

Open the door, step outside, stretch, breathe and garden. It’s easy, accessible, rewarding, doesn’t involve Lycra or super-cushy rides. And it’s surprisingly intense and effective, if you know how to work it.
