Garden care during autumn and winter

To have a healthy, flourishing and beautiful garden it is important to remember that caring for your garden is an all year task. Whilst gardening in the spring and summer may be more appealing, to keep your garden looking its best it needs to looked after during the autumn and winter too.

Gardening during the different seasons requires you to tackle different gardening tasks as the garden will have different care requirements. Not only do the different seasons have their own season specific maintenance tasks but different flowers, veg and fruit need to be planted during specific time periods to grow during different seasons.

Snow Season Shopping with Simply Hike

Even though I bet as soon as the kids go back to school this September that we have a mini heatwave as we only have a handful of days left of the summer holidays and our family holiday enjoying the beach in the sun seems a lifetime ago my thoughts have turned to winter adventures.

I adore the snow just as much as I love the sun. Holidays in snowy climates are just as amazing as beach holidays. Over the years I have had incredible experiences on the slopes and love the feeling of skiing in stunning surroundings with the sun glistening on the crisp white snow.

Freezin' fun with Penguins.

Today we awoke to the first frost of this winter. Whilst other areas of the country has seen the frost and snow before now, until today the closest we got to winter’s harsh frost has been a bitter chill in the wind. As winter has finally made its appearance and the days have turned icy cold and the nights frosty it seemed fitting that Jelly Bean was dressed up in a wintery themed outfit.

Inspiring thoughts of snow and cold, this super cute Freezin’ Christmas 2 piece was the perfect for our first frosty winter day.

The adorable penguin evokes thoughts of winter. The penguin is a lovely design with the rosy red cheeks and red feet standing out from the lovely grey of the penguin and the crisp white top.

Brrr! Preparing the home for winter.

As we move through autumn into swiftly approaching winter keeping yourself, your loved ones and your home warm soon becomes a priority as the nights draw in and the cold embraces us.

Not only is the cold unpleasant to feel and experience but it also can be a risk to your health, being particularly risky for the elderly and young children.

Being parents to 2 young children, 1 being a newborn baby, it is vital for us to try our best to keep our home and our children warm during the colder months. As we live in an older house that gets quite cold it can be a little tricky to keep the cold at bay especially thanks to the cost of heating but as it is important to keep our home warm for the sake of our children (and ourselves) I have been looking at ways to prepare your home for winter.

Keep your home warm this Winter and reduce your energy bills.

Learn how to bleed your radiators to celebrate National Radiator Day 2014.

Over the winter months many homes across the country will see their heating bills sky rocket as the need to have the heating on more often thanks to the cold temperatures is too hard to ignore. Whilst unfortunately there’s nothing you can do about high energy prices you can help reduce your heating bills by making sure your heating system is prepared for the winter months ahead.

As an efficient heating system will use less fuel to heat your home, which in turn will help reduce your heating bills, it is vital to keep on top of essential heating system maintenance. A sign that your radiator needs a little TLC is that it takes a long time to heat up; other signs are that your radiator has cold patches or heats unevenly. Thankfully the easiest way to fix this problem and to have your heating system working efficiently is to bleed your radiator.

Don’t know how to bleed your radiator?

If you are unsure of how to bleed your radiator and are little daunted by the notion of this essential radiator maintenance then fear not as BoilerJuice, a leading UK online home heating oil price comparison site, have created a helpful infographic to celebrate National Radiator Day (1st November 2014) that shows you how to bleed your radiator and why it is important to do so.

A magical dream winter holiday - Santa's Lapland.

Whilst it may seem absurd to be thinking about Santa and Christmas during Summer as I love all things Christmassy and like to be organised, preparing for it in advance by saving money all year round ready for the holiday season plus buying presents in sales, it is no surprise that regardless of the time of year I often think about all things Christmassy.

Also being a mum I am often reminded about Christmas and Santa from my excited little one who enchanted by the holiday season and legendary Santa cannot wait for Christmas to come around again.  My demanding threenager has already been asking for toys and treats to be added to his Christmas list and has been curiously asking what Santa is doing now in summer……does Santa go to the beach like us mama?  Does Santa have a BBQ?  Does Santa take his reindeer’s to the park?

Thankfully I have been able to quench Bug’s interest in what Santa is up to outside of the Christmas season with a little help from Santa’s news updates of what he is doing now.  News of Santa grooming his reindeer and interviewing new elves has delighted Bug who was also very excited to hear that Santa loves barbecues in the summer and loves to holiday at the beach!

Bye bye storms and flooding? Hello snow??

Fierce storms battered the UK as we said a wet and windy goodbye to 2013 and a stormy hello to 2014, with Mother Nature leaving devastation in her wake thanks to torrential rain, fierce winds, flooding and tidal waves the country has been storm ravaged again and again over the past few weeks.

Storm surges have savaged miles of coastline with the power of the storms having collapsed cliffs and wrecked sea fronts with homes and businesses along the coast being flooded and battered by the wind and water.  Thousands of acres of countryside have been left underwater and rivers have overflowed leading to immense flooding throughout the country with hundreds of homes flooded across Britain.  The misery of the storms has seen hundreds of flood alerts being issued with villages and towns being evacuated for safety.  Devastatingly the damage caused by the storm has not been limited to the coast, countryside and homes as sadly lives have been lost due to the bad weather.

After weeks of immense storms the severe weather warnings issued by the Environment Agency have at last expired but the risk of further flooding remains due to the impact of the vast rainfall already experienced and further forecasts of rain with water still draining into rivers which could lead to further overflowing of some rivers.

E.ON Saving Energy Toolkit helping families save energy and money.

With winters chill and frosty bite making an appearance households across the country are inevitably attempting to battle the freezing temperatures and keep themselves and their homes warm during this cold time of year.  Unfortunately the downside of reaching for the thermostat in an attempt to keep the cold at bay means many households see their fuel bills skyrocket.

With the cost of living costing many a pretty penny and today’s delicate financial climate already negatively affecting numerous people across the country the burden of additional fuel bills can be too much for countless people to endure.

As fuel prices soar many people feel that there is nothing they can do to prevent their bills increasing and find the tricky balancing act of sticking to a strict budget being blown apart when they reach for the thermostat.  Sadly increasing bills are too much for countless households to handle and they have to sacrifice basic needs or suffer the cold without additional heating in the hope of keeping the bills at a manageable amount.

Even though increasing bills and fuel poverty can be daunting with the thought of a freezing winter without being able to afford additional heating terrifying there are a few ways that you can reduce your energy bills which will help with the burden of heating your home this winter.
