Dog Training Tips that will Help you to See Results Fast

When you bring your new dog home, you need to begin training them right away. If you don’t know where to start or if you want to try and make a huge difference to your dog’s behaviour early-on, then this is the guide for you.

Choosing your Dog’s Name

Part of the fun of bringing a new dog or puppy home is choosing a name for them. Did you know that certain names are much better for training when compared to others? If you want to make it easier for your dog, then you need to try and choose a short name that ends in a very strong consonant. This will help them to hear whatever you say clearly. A strong ending is crucial, so think about names such as Jasper, Ginger or even Jack. This will really help your dog to pick up on their name much faster. This is especially the case when you put an emphasis on the end.

Preparing to own your own horse

It is always an event when you are about to get a new pet, and it is certainly something that any of us find exciting. But sometimes you are going to be particularly excited, and one example is when you are getting a pet which is a little less common than the normal choice of dog or cat. One example of this is when you get your own home, something that - while not entirely unheard of - is not something that many people will do in their lives. That being said, horses have long had a relationship with humans that is quite unlike any other kind of animal relationship, and this is something that you might want to take advantage of by getting your own horse. If you do, there are a number of things you will need to be prepared for, including the following.

5 Ways To Keep Your Older Dog Happy and Healthy

It seems relatively straightforward to keep a younger dog happy and having fun. Gear up for playtime, bring the enthusiasm, and they’ll respond positively. When they get older, however, things become a little bit more difficult. They no longer have the same energy as they did when they were puppies, and their overall enthusiasm levels take a dip. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t be happy and healthy in their older years, oh no. Managed correctly, you can ensure that their life is just as rich and satisfying as any other period of their life.

What Brings Joy To Our Furry Friends?

No other animal in the entire world has been given the great honor of being called man’s best friend than dogs. They’re so incredibly human at times because their lives are a lot like ours. They want excitement, but they also want security, they want a family but also like to have their own personal space, they like to eat tasty unhealthy foods but also love to run around in the park.

We get pets because we want a companion as specifically, a sentient being that isn’t human. Human beings have had this inseparable connection with dogs for so long. Maybe it's because they’re descendants of wolves and therefore we both have a pack mentality. On the other hand, it could be because we value loyalty and you can’t get much more of that than in dogs. We bring them home and into our lives and everything seems to be fine. They melt away into the background and then come out as one of the family. But ask yourself, do we really know what brings our furry friends joy? Afterall, we want to live a fulfilled life so why would it be any different for dogs.

Why it's so important to protect your pet

Pets are so much easier to look after than kids. They grow up quicker and seem to just look after themselves for the most part. Just look at how independent cats are! But they are domestic pets, and they do need a lot more human intervention than you may think. Sure, your cat might have a talent for scoring food from every one of the neighbours. And your dog knows how to get a tickled tummy just by rolling over near an elderly lady. Beyond this ‘self-provision’ though, is an essential health care. That can only come from you.

Did you know that a flea infestation can make your dog or cat incredibly ill? They can become anemic and suffer painful skin infections. Left untreated, it’s possible this could even kill them. It’s so important to choose flea protection like Advecta II to avoid any type of infestation. It’s so much easier than having to get the little blighters out of your pet’s hair and the furniture too. And if your pet is allergic to flea bites, you are saving them from a terrible experience too.

How your pets are helping you

Your pet is the heart of your household; you might think you’re doing a lot for them by feeding them, playing with them, and giving them a comfy place to sleep, but the truth is they are doing more for you than you realised. Sure, you already know that they’re giving you unconditional love, endless entertainment, and a reason to exercise, but there are few other benefits to having a pet. They can be frustrating sometimes, but the next time you lose your temper, remember that these are only some of the things your pets do for you.

They get you outside
Taking your pet for long walks works wonders on more than just your physical health; sunshine and fresh air elevate your mood and the sun gives you an extra dose of vitamin D, which helps you fight physical and mental conditions, including depression, cancer, obesity, and heart attacks. Not to mention the sheer joy you might feel playing with your hyperactive puppy and rewarding him with treats for dogs whenever he learns a new trick. The next time you’re feeling stressed, take your dog to the park or the woods, and listen to the sounds of nature while the sun shines on your face. You might feel a little more relaxed.

They’re company
Even most introverts don’t like being by themselves all the time. Pets are amazing company because they don’t judge, their love is unconditional, and they know when you need to be with someone. Often they will seek you out when you’re feeling down, refusing to allow you to remain alone. They’re also great listeners, so you can vent your worries and frustrations to someone who will listen impartially, and then give you a reassuring cuddle. Whether you’re going through a tough time, or you’ve just had a bad day, your beloved companions provide some quiet comfort to get you through the rough patch. Then they’re ready to cheer you up with their next bout of mischief.

They’re a reason to get up in the morning
Taking care of others can give everyone a sense of purpose, and no one needs more care than a pet. They rely on you to go and buy food, clean their bowls, and take them out for exercise. Research shows that pet owners are healthier and more motivated to recover after illness than non-pet owners because they have someone who needs them. More importantly, taking care of a pet teaches us to take care of ourselves; taking an interest in their diet and exercise encourages us to take an interest in our own health and wellbeing.

They make you smile
All your pets have to do is stare at you with their big soulful eyes and you melt a little. Even if they’ve been really naughty and made a mess all over the house, you usually let them off the hook because of those eyes. Also, more often than not you’re filming them as they get into mischief and laughing.

My Dream Pet campaign with Petplan

From before I can even remember I have always had pets. Dogs have always had a loving home with my family and there has always been at least one dog we have called family living in our home over the years. Other pets have also come and gone; hamsters, fish, parrots, rabbits and cats. Growing up on a farm I also considered a few of the farm animals as my pets too; there was one special cow that I adored and the little piglets were too cute not to fall in love with.

My first memory of my very own pet was a beautiful cat called Ginger. I loved her dearly but unfortunately one day she scampered off for adventures on the farm and she never came back. I remember feeling heartbroken and so lost without her.

Caring for your dog during fireworks season - YuCALM Dog

As mentioned before we love animals and adore our pets. Being animal lovers we wholeheartedly believe that caring for animals is extremely important.

We believe that being a pet owner carries an important responsibility and that if you take on the role of being a pet owner and welcome an animal into your home that you should ensure that the animal’s wellbeing, health and happiness is catered for. As they say ‘a dog is for life, not just for Christmas’, which we believe applies to all animals as having a pet is a lifelong commitment and responsibility.

Lintbells who make natural products of tasty, nutritional supplements for pets that are proven to improve their health, also believe that animal wellbeing is of the upmost importance.

Caring for your dog when you have a hectic family life

In our house our pets are thought of as part of the family. They are precious to us and we love and care for them dearly.

At the moment our extended animal family includes 2 goldfish and 2 dogs. Our dogs Trixie and Sassy are both fun, loving and friendly family members.

As we believe that being pet owners carries a big responsibility we ensure all their needs a met. Whilst we do our best to love and care for the, thanks to leading a busy family life with the important responsibility of having 2 young children to care for having and looking after pets especially lively dogs can be hard work.

Having been a dog owner for lots of years now since my childhood I have found a few ways to ease the hard work that comes with being a dog owner.

What you will have wished you'd known before getting a pet dog

Dog’s are a wonderful pet. There is no surprise why they are often called ‘man’s best friend.’ They are loyal, fun and there for you. They have an unconditional love for you; that is just so lovely. They make great pets, but there are some things that you will want to know about getting a dog, beforehand. So here are a few little insights.

Why a dog is a great pet for a child

Most kids ask their parents for a pet at some point in their childhood. Sometimes it’s not practical to have a pet. Your home may be too small, or you may have allergies.

If you are considering a pet for your child, there are plenty of choices. Not all of them are fluffy and cuddly. Lizards and even snakes can be popular pets for children, if not for their mums! And not all pets live in the home. Some children have ponies, goats, or alpacas for pets. Perhaps the most popular pet though is the dog. Lots of children love how cuddly, cute and comical puppies can be. And a dog is certainly one of the best pets you can get for your child.

Celebrating National Pet Month - splashing out on your pet with Ocean!

Over the years I have been fortunate to have a number of pets touch my life. Having experienced the love and enjoyment that a pet can bring to a household I believe being a pet owner is a privilege.

As I love pets and consider it to be a privilege to experience the joy a pet can bring to the household I believe that along with being a responsible pet owner, caring for a pet's and providing them with a good diet, exercise, attention and medical care, it is lovely to treat them too with special pet treats and goodies.

As Ocean Loans realise that the UK is a nation of pet lovers and that sometimes it can be hard to treat our pet friends due to finances being tight, to celebrate National Pet Month  when responsible pet ownership is promoted they helped us treat our beloved pets.

Currently in our house we have two dogs, Sassy and Trixie.

I have been fortunate to experience the love, enjoyment and companionship that pets can provide.  Over the years I have had cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and gerbils, all of which were part of my family. Living and growing up on a farm I also considered the pigs and cows as my pets.  In essence I love animals and believe that there are many benefits to having animals touch your life in one way or another, with being a pet owner a great experience.

Help your pets this fireworks season - win an Adaptil Calming Diffuser for Dogs with PetShopBowl.

As the nights are drawing and a wintery chill fills the air we are fast approaching fireworks season.  Whilst the colourful fireworks with their loud explosions may be mesmerizing and awe-inspiring for us humans our animal friends can be left scared and unsettled by the unpredictable loud noises that resonate for miles around on fireworks night.

The unpredictable loud noises of fireworks can have a strong effect on pets causing them fear and stress. The noise of fireworks can cause various stress reactions for pets such as withdrawing into themselves, hiding away, wanting to escape from the noise which may lead to them injuring themselves in the panic, soiling the house or shivering with fear.

The following tips may help make fireworks night a calm, safe and less frightening night for you and your pets especially if you know your pet/s hates the noise of fireworks night –
* keep animals inside
* create a hiding place for your pet to snuggle in
* prepare for unusual behaviour and don’t get angry with your pet
* close windows and curtains
* if your pet is used to the sound of the TV/music turn it on to help muffle the sound of fireworks (but not on too loud)
* if you have small pets partly cover their cage/pen with a blanket to help sound proof from the fireworks but make sure they can still look out if they want to and provide extra bedding so your pet can burrow and hide

Realising the importance of keeping pets happy and calm during fireworks night PetShopBowl – a nationwide pet food home delivery company – stock Adaptil and Feliway to help keep your pet calm and happy during firework season.

Being the kind, pet loving company that they are PetShopBowl are kindly offering one of my readers a little help in keeping their pet calm and happy on fireworks night this year thanks to the great giveaway prize they are supplying to one lucky winner…..an Adaptil Calming Diffuser for Dogs (48ml).
