Bambu Weaning Bowl and Spoons Review from Scamps and Scallywags

The lovely Jane from Scamps and Scallywags recently sent us a Bambu weaning bowl and a pair of spoons to test.  As Tristan is eating food now these products are ideal for us to test and I was looking forward to using them.

I was tagged by CoombeMill to take part in Mammywoo’s Music Is Therapy Meme.

The concept is simple I simply have to pick –

3 beautiful songs
3 different bands
3 sets of lyrics that touch me in any way I want to show

Teary eyed

Yesterday I became rather teary eyed over an advert.  It wasn’t even one of those sad adverts to save vulnerable children, animals or third world sadness that brought a shimmer of teary-ness to my eyes.  It was an advert for John Lewis.

Diglot Books Cymraeg - English ABC Book Review

As I am Welsh and Lee is English we will be raising Tristan bilingually to speak and write both Welsh and English.  When I was offered the opportunity to review a Diglot Books ABC book I thought it was very apt for us as we are a bilingual family.

Country Kids - Making Memories

I have lived in the country all of my life and grew up playing outdoors, enjoying the countryside on my doorstep.  My grandparents had a farm, which we lived on for a great chunk of my life and when we moved it was only a few miles away and we still spent a huge amount of time on the farm.  I have fond memories of playing outdoors; picking blackberries on the farm, climbing trees and making dens in the woods, building sandcastles on the beach and swimming in the sea, making mud pies, sledging in the snow….so many memories that I treasure.

New Release Dates For Justin Fletcher Hands Up...The Album

I posted two weeks ago about receiving an advanced copy of the new Justin Fletcher album called “Hands Up….The Album” to review.  Unfortunately due to Justin Fletcher is extremely busy schedule entertaining our little ones on his successful TV show Justin’s House, rehearsals for pantomime and live performances the release of the album has been delayed until the next year.  The album is now going to be released on the 26th of March 2012 and the first single from the album titled ‘Hands Up’ will now be digitally released on the 20th of November.

Teething Troubles!!

I officially hate teething!!

Poor little Tristan has been suffering terribly over the last few days.  The usual teething aids and remedies are all to hand but just don’t seem to be easing his discomfort at the moment.  Teething powder, Weleda homeopathic teething granules, teething gel, organic monkey cheeky monkey cheek oil rub, amber teething necklace, teethers, calpol……over the last few days they have all been reached for at one time or another and are no longer easing his discomfort and cries of pain.

It breaks my heart to hear and see him cry in his sleep and all I want to do is take away his pain.  Anything he can get his hands on ends up in his mouth being angrily chewed on, his cheeks are all red and the dribble has stepped up a gear and there is copious amount of it.  So far there is no sign of any teeth just a whole amount of discomfort and symptoms.  I’ve been doing all I can to ease his discomfort and we’ve been having cuddles galore.  In spite of the horridness of teething he is a little champion and still gives his mummy beautiful smiles and fun times.  Fingers crossed this discomfort eases soon for my little monkey.

Baby&More Sleeved Wonder Bib Review

Tristan loves his food and enjoys making a lovely mess.  Standard bibs just don’t keep the mess off of his clothes so I was delighted when Baby&More offered the Mum 2 Mum Sleeved Wonder Bib for Tristan to test hoping that this bib would handle his mealtime mess.

Baby&More was established in 2007 by Kate, a mum of two, with an aim of providing products designed by mums for mums.  They source high quality and award winning practical baby products that are affordable baby solutions that not only look good but most importantly really do work.  Baby&More are passionate about providing brilliant products and providing customers with excellent customer service and pride themselves on only providing customers with brands that produce finished products that are of a high standard.

Remembrance Day

PCOS Awareness Week 2011

It’s currently PCOS Awareness Week and as someone who has PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) I wanted to write a little post promoting the week.  I meant to write this at the start of the week but have only got around to writing it now... tut tut :(

Last year was the first ever PCOS Awareness week and after its success it is now an annual event with 2011’s PCOS Awareness week being held from the 5th to the 12th of November.  The week is about raising awareness regarding the condition and informing people about the work that Verity do in supporting women who live with PCOS.  During PCOS Awareness week there are numerous activities happening to raise support and awareness.  Take a look at their website to see the activities they have for this week, including a PCOS puzzle and competition.

PCOS can make many women feel lonely and isolated and that no one understands what they are going through.  The self-help group Verity, established in 1997, is for women with PCOS and “Verity aims to help you understand your condition, to manage your symptoms and support you through what can be a lonely and emotional time.”  Information about PCOS and the support Verity provides can be found on their website.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS for short, was first discovered in 1935 and it is a condition where women who have polycystic ovaries also have one or more additional symptoms.  According to Verity’s website
“The term polycystic ovaries describes ovaries that contain many small cysts (about twice as many as in normal ovaries), usually no bigger than 8 millimetres each, located just below the surface of the ovaries. These cysts are egg-containing follicles that have not developed properly due to a number of hormonal abnormalities.

Polycystic ovaries (PCO) are very common, affecting around 20 per cent of women. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is also very common, affecting 5–10 per cent of women.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS):
  • affects millions of women in the UK and worldwide
  • runs in families
  • is one of the leading causes of fertility problems in women
  • if not properly managed, can lead to additional health problems in later life
  • can affect a woman’s appearance and self-esteem.

Although PCOS is treatable, it cannot be cured.”

The symptoms of PCOS are vast and not all women will have all the symptoms with PCOS affecting women in different ways, for some women they only have a few mild symptoms whilst for some women they suffer from a lot of symptoms and more severely.  As stated on the Verity website the “Symptoms can include:
  • irregular periods, or a complete lack of periods
  • irregular ovulation, or no ovulation at all
  • reduced fertility – difficulty becoming pregnant, recurrent miscarriage
  • unwanted facial or body hair (hirsutism)
  • oily skin, acne
  • thinning hair or hair loss from the scalp (alopecia)
  • weight problems – being overweight, rapid weight gain, difficulty losing weight
  • depression and mood changes.”
I personally suffer from a wide range of symptoms, some more severely than others.  I was diagnosed with PCOS in my teens and I felt alone.  For years PCOS felt like a huge weight dragging me down and I struggled to be happy with myself and how I look and I worried that I would have difficulty having children one day.  I felt that nobody understood, least of all men and that they would not love or accept me because of PCOS and its symptoms.

Then I found Lee, very early on I told him that I suffered from PCOS and to my surprise he already knew a little about the condition which was a relief and made me feel less embarrassed.  In Lee I have found someone who accepts and loves me for who I am and looks past the symptoms.  Having his love, understanding and support has helped me overcome my own ‘issues’ with having PCOS and I now accept myself for who I am and I no longer hate suffering from it but embrace it and realise that there are people in this world that are worse off than me.

One symptom I never knew if I suffered with or not was reduced fertility and if I would have difficulty in becoming pregnant.  I have always wanted children and there was always a little voice in my head that would tell me I’d struggle to conceive.  Knowing that Lee wanted children I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to give him this but he reassured me that he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and having children together would be a bonus.

Thankfully any worries were unfounded.  I realise I am very lucky in the fact that we had no problems getting pregnant, the first month of trying it just happened for us and I am very grateful that it did especially as I am aware of so many women who try for years with no success.  I worry a little that when we are ready for a second baby will things be very different and will we struggle to conceive….I tell myself worrying wont help, only time will tell and we are lucky that we have a healthy and happy child in Tristan and anymore would be a bonus.

    Gaming Widows

I noticed yesterday on facebook numerous comments about being a COD (Call of Duty) widow.  With the release of the new game Call of Duty MW3 it seemed a lot of husbands and boyfriends were rushing out to get the new game or eagerly awaiting their pre-ordered copy.  Lee enjoys his games and Call of Duty is one of the ones I know he enjoys playing on his PS3.

Seeing the numerous comments, some even saying how their husbands/boyfriends were even queuing in the middle of the night just to get their hands on a copy quicker, made me feel grateful that even though Lee would love to get the game he is waiting until we can afford it.  I love the fact that he has thought that the little money we do have is needed on other more important things for Tristan and the family as a whole than on a game that he can get another time on pay day when we can actually afford it.

I like him having his PS3 and games, he enjoys them and I think it’s important that he does things he enjoys and relaxes.  I don’t play many games myself, I have a Nintendo Wii that I won a couple of years ago that I enjoy playing every now and again, its great for a giggle at family occasions like Christmas and I do enjoy Guitar Hero, expressing my inner rock goddess.  I like to take an interest in Lee’s games and actually enjoy helping him with the clues in Batman.

I think Lee balances his gaming life and family life very well…..not only will he not buy games unless we can really afford them but he also never spends hours transfixed to games ignoring everyone like I’ve heard other women complaining about their partners doing.  If he’s playing and I need a hand he always immediately stops the game and helps me out.  I would never complain about Lee’s gaming, he enjoys it and doesn’t take it to the extreme and he doesn’t drink or go out.  Gaming and his other love of football are things I am more than happy to live with.

As the saying goes “boys and their toys” and for most women their partner’s enjoyment in gaming is a cross they have to bear.  I sympathise with all the gaming widows out there and I am grateful that Lee hasn’t completely forgotten about us and crossed over completely into the gaming World.

    Monkey Stars Sleep Gown Review

When the lovely Monkey Stars offered one of their sleep gowns for Tristan to test I was looking forward to testing it out especially as we have never used a sleep gown before.

Monkey Stars is family run online baby sleep boutique based in Northampton which was founded in 2010.  Realising the importance of quality sleep for developing babies and toddlers they provide customers with ground-breaking designs and practical ideas to help them get a great night’s sleep, helping babies and tots be happy.  They sell fun and affordable baby and toddlers products that are also comfortable and practical, only selling products that they use or would use with their children.

This Sleepy Little Monkeys Baby Sleep Gown is soft white 100% cotton with three little monkeys snoozing amongst the stars on the front of the gown.  The gown is one size and fits approximately 6-12months.

I really like the design on this gown, I think the three monkeys are very cute and I like that it is suitable for both boys and girls.  The material is really soft, I have washed and dried this sleep gown a few times since we’ve been testing it and it washes and dries really well and is just as soft as it was when new.  It has an envelope neck and Tristan is very comfortable wearing it.  As Tristan is only 7 months old there is still plenty of growing room however Tristan is quite long and as such the bottom doesn’t always cover his feet especially when he’s wriggling around.  I think the sleep gown would be better if it was a tad longer.

The bottom is elasticated which is great for making nappy changing easier, this is especially useful during the middle of the night when you are tired and it saves you having to deal with annoying poppers and disturbing your little one when contending with baby grows.  Tristan sleeps through now so nappy changes during the night time is not as frequent as it was when he was younger, having used this now I wish I had used a sleep gown when he was newborn to help make nappy changes quick and easy.  With nights getting colder I think this sleep gown is ideal to combine with a sleeping bag and as it’s got long sleeves his arms are kept warm.  I think it would also be great in the summer where I would only put the gown and a nappy on Tristan, helping to keep him cool.

I really like this sleep gown, it a great quality simple yet practical item.  I would definitely use one when I have another baby from birth and think the sleep gown is ideal from those first few months of a little ones life.

This Sleepy Little Monkeys – Baby Sleep Gown can be purchased on Monkey Stars website for £5.99, which I think is great value for money.  Monkey Stars can be followed on twitter @MonkeyStarsBaby and you can also join them on their facebook page.  You can also purchase the other items that they sell on their website, including baby slings and carriers, sleeping bags and comforters.

    * Monkey Stars kindly gave us this sleep gown to review for free, despite this I have written an honest review that contains my own words and opinions and is 100% my own *

November Already....Where Has The Year Gone?

I can’t believe we are in November already….this year has flown by!!

At the start of the year I still had a big bump and it’s unreal that I now have a 7 month old baby boy.  He’s growing up so fast and time is going way too fast!!  I’ve recently had my birthday, another year older but definitely none the wiser….still using baby brain as an excuse for being so brain dead :)  The clocks have gone back signalling the end of British Summer time and the weather is getting colder as we move into winter.

Halloween has also been and gone.  I like Halloween but I have never really done anything to celebrate it apart from when I was younger and it was just another excuse to go out on the town and have a good time.  We never did anything big to celebrate it, just a quiet night in together.  Lee got a big pumpkin and carved a scary face, this year is the first time I have ever got a pumpkin at home for Halloween.  I did get Tristan a little Halloween outfit….he was my little pumpkin.  We live in the sticks and as expected we did not have any Trick or Treaters….never had any in all the years I’ve lived where we are, a bit off the beaten track for people to come visit us.  Me and Lee also watched a scary film together….a lovely, quiet Halloween.

Guy Fawkes night has also said goodbye for yet another year.  When I was little my mum used to take me and my sister every year to watch fireworks at a local castle and I have fond memories of the excitement of the night and watching pretty sights in the dark night sky.  Every year on the same weekend of the fireworks there is a local rally and we used to go watch it after the fireworks late in to the night.  This year there was no rally for me and we decided not to bother going to watch any fireworks.

This month is my sister’s birthday and just before Christmas I’ve also got Lee’s birthday, his first being a daddy and my mum’s birthday the day after…..it’s a busy time of year for us.  Everywhere there are reminders that Christmas is round the corner and the countdown has begun.  I am not ready whatsoever, need to get organised and decide what to buy for everyone.  This will be Tristan’s first Christmas and the second Christmas Lee and I will have together.  Last year I was nearly 6 months pregnant and thinking how this year we would have our little son.  I am very excited about having Christmas with my little family.  I’m also looking forward to New Year’s as New Year’s Eve is me and Lee’s second anniversary.

Charity Auction in aid of STEPS

I want to tell you all about an online Charity Auction to raise money for the charity STEPS.

This charity auction is being hosted by Liz and Andy Wilson whose 13 month old daughter Amelia was born breach, a scan on her hips later discovered that her hips were not sitting correctly in the joint.  Their daughter had to be in a Pavlik Harness for a few months and was then given the good news that things had progressed well and she would need checkups every 6 months.  After joining a facebook group for parents with children coping with hip dysfunction dysplasia (HDD) and learning about the various stories and the problems other people’s little ones have encountered they realised that they are lucky that Amelia has had such a small problem and not needed surgery to treat her problem.  As a thank you to STEPS and to give something back they hope to raise money with this auction to help those who have been affected by the problem.

The registered charity STEPS helps over 2,000 families a year with children who are affected by lower limb abnormalities.  Their mission is “to drive forward the provision of quality support and information to empower everyone affected by lower limb conditions.”

“STEPS endeavours to support children, adults and their families in accessing the best support and treatment for them to lead a ?normal - life, and most importantly reassuring them that they are not alone. ”  They’ve been offering support to parents for over 20 years and have expanded their services to cover adults affect by these conditions in childhood who are having problems.  They help by –

    • National telephone help-line
    • Information and guidance service – comprehensive library of information relating to conditions affecting lower limbs, a regular magazine and equipment/aid list
    • Annual event that brings people together who share common experiences and provides the opportunity to meet experts
    • Awareness campaigns to raise awareness of lower limb conditions to help early detection of conditions to enable treatment to be more effective
    • Family contact and one-to-one support programme for parents with children with lower limb conditions
    • International club foot project that aims to raise awareness in developing countries about club foot and treatments available

More information about STEPS and lower limb abnormalities can be found on the STEPS website.

It’s still not too late to donate something that can be auctioned for this fantastic cause with the proceeds of the auction going to the charity STEPS.  The auction is being held on the 'Charity Auction in aid of Steps' facebook page and the auction will start at 7pm on Friday the 11th of November and it will end on Sunday the 20th of November at 7pm.

I wanted to show my support to a fantastic cause and charity auction and try to help spread the word.  We are fortunate that Tristan has had no health problems, for many little ones this is a different story and I want to try and support charities that help families and children who are affected by health problems and conditions.  I hope that you can take a look at the charity auction’s page and help support this brilliant cause, help spread the word about the auction and take a look at the wide range of fantastic items available to bid on to raise money for STEPS.

Organic and Ethical Products are no longer boring!!

Whilst online the other day I stumbled across a lovely little company that I just want to share with my lovely followers.  Not only is the company I found great for those of us with little ones but it also great for expectant parents too.

The company I discovered is Scamps and Scallyways.  Scamps and Scallywags is a funky company who sell eye catching clothes, cute toys, gorgeous gifts and items that you won’t find on the high street.  Their mission is to provide customers with organic and ethically produced products for babies and toddlers that are fun and funky, providing style and individuality whilst also being practical and durable.

Scamps and Scallywags founder Jane became interested in natural and ethical products when she was pregnant; however she found it hard to find natural and ethical products that were bright, funky and weren’t boring pastels.  Becoming parents for the first time to their son Oliver, Jane and her partner Manny found their priorities changed, realising the benefit of natural products Scamps and Scallywags was born.  Through Scamps and Scallywags they aim to provide natural, ethical and great quality items that are excellent value for money and practically designed with children in mind, dressing kids as kids but with fashion-forward prints and designs that will stand the test of time.  They have sourced original items and clothes that allow little personalities to shine with bright and funky designs, proving that natural and ethical items can be fun and as they say on their website “because being organic and ethical doesn’t have to be boring” and they say “Goodbye boring pastels, hello funky prints!”

Scamps and Scallywags have sourced a fabulous selection of brands that prove original and ethical products exist which are bright, original and funky.  They sell 100% organic cotton clothing ranges by Little Green Radicals, Organic Zoo, Organics for Kids and Toby Tiger; a bamboo/cotton denim basics range by Bamboo baby, charming hand made toys from Under the Nile, irresistible bath and bedtime products from Celtic Herbal, Earth Mama Angel Baby and My Munchkin.  They also have an eating range which includes items from Bambu who produce bamboo bowls and utensils and cute bibs from Little Green Radicals that are hip and ethical helping make mealtimes fun.  Scamps and Scallywags also have a range of gorgeous, original ready-made gift sets, hand-made photo albums and hand-carved keepsake boxes from Nkuku.  Scamps and Scallywags intend to extend their range of toys.

I think the items they sell are very original and definitely not things you’d see on the high street, I really like the Recycle Tantrums Organic cotton T-Shirt from Little Green Radicals which I think is quirky and fun and I think that Under the Nile's Veggin' Out Organic Fruit Toys are extremely original and so very cute.

Scamps and Scallywags care about where the products they sell come from and how they are made, customers can be reassured that there are buying ethically and responsibly without compromising on quality and originality.  All the brands that Scamps and Scallywags have sourced and sell on their website have one thing in common, they are all manufactured by people who share their values.  Aside from being original and natural all the products are manufactured in safe and clean environments, produced to a high standard and are free from damaging chemicals and toxins.  They are an excellent and safe choice for little ones.  The organic cotton that the clothing they sell is made of is grown using traditional methods without any harmful pesticides, which is better for our little ones bodies and better for the environment too.  Organic cotton is perfect for babies’ health and comfort and is especially beneficial to those suffering with skin allergies or asthma.

I really like Scamps and Scallywags values and beliefs and how they not only are the products they sell beneficial to little ones but are kind to environment too.  I have spoken to Jane about Scamps and Scallywags values and she said We don't claim to be speaky-clean green, but we work with a conscience and try to minimise our impact by working with like-minded suppliers who share our values.  Our clothing is made from 100% organic fabrics, printed with non-toxic AZO-free dyes and all other products are both natural and ethically produced throughout the supply chain.  We use recycled/reusable/biodegradable materials for our marketing and packaging, and try to run paperless administration where possible.”
      `
They are also dedicated in sourcing and providing original and organic pregnancy and new baby products and they have a linked website called Womb Mates for these particular products.  Parents want to do the best for their little ones even before they are born, from the moment of conception and the benefits of the natural and organic products they supply are a perfect choice for expectant mums and parents of precious new babies who want to give their loved ones the best without compromising on outstanding quality or originality.  Womb Mates have a range of irresistible pampering and well-being products from Celtic Herbal and Earth Mama Angel Baby for expectant mums and new baby and a range of organic baby wear from Little Green Radicals, Organic Zoo and Organics for Kids.

Womb Mates is currently being redeveloped, whilst the redevelopment is happening their full product range including expectant mums is on Scamps and Scallywags.  The two brands, Scamps and Scallywags and Womb Mates compliment each other, with Womb Mates focusing on products for pregnancy and new baby (0-12m) and Scamps and Scallywags focusing on baby and toddler products 0-4 years with the aim to eventually provide products up to 5 years.  This overlap is intentional so that they can develop relationships with expectant mothers as they provide natural and organic products during pregnancy and then continue to provide natural products for their little ones over the years as their babies grow.  I have been told that they are expanding their range of maternity products to include products from a Swedish company called Boob Design and they intent on including hospital bag essentials and new baby products.

Womb Mates has an interesting array of products that I have never seen before and I wish I had come across this company when I was expecting as I would have loved to have tried Earth Mama Angel Baby Organic Herbal Teas Morning Wellness Tea to see if it would have helped relieve the terrible, constant morning sickness I suffered from and I would have loved to have tried the Earth Mama Angel Baby Organic Postpartum Bottom Spray to see if it eased the discomfort and soreness I suffered after birth from the Episiotomy I had.

Scamps and Scallywags can be found on twitter @funkyscamps and they have a facebook page too, would be great if you pop over and show this lovely company some love and join them.

Tommee Tippee Explora Easy to Drink Cup and Weaning Bowl Set Review

As well as being sent Tommee Tippee’s Closer to Nature Hygiene Range to review (take a look at the review here) I was also sent their Explora Easy Drink cup and Weaning Bowls set to test with Bug. Having already started to wean Bug I was pleased at having the opportunity to test these products.

Tommee Tippee produce baby and toddler products which include their hygiene range, baby changing products, soothing products including teethers and toys and their feeding range. They have received numerous awards and accolades and are one of the top brands of baby and toddler products in the global market. All of their feeding products are BPA free.
